Working with me

Postdocs, Visiting Scholars, & Visiting Student Researchers

I do not currently have funding to hire postdocs, but I can sponsor postdocs and visitors who have external funding.

Prospective PhD Students

Berkeley sociology, like most US sociology departments, admits a cohort of students through an admissions committee. This means that graduate students are not tied to a single professor for getting accepted or being funded. It also means that reaching out to individual faculty won’t be very helpful in your applications, because we do not make decisions about admitting students.

This webpage for prospective students from the Duke sociology department has a lot of good advice that is true for sociology PhD programs in general. You may find it helpful.

Graduate RAs

If you are a graduate student at Berkeley, I may have research assistant work and funding for you. Depending on your role in the project, you may also qualify for authorship. I tend to have more work for students with computational / big data skills, but I work with qualitative students as well. Find my email in the campus directory.

Undergraduate RAs

Undergraduate students at Berkeley are welcome to reach out about research opportunities. While RAs learn as they go, you will need experience with python, data science, and the command line in order to be successful. Find my email in the campus directory.
